Mercedes “Stop Vehicle Leave Engine Running” — What This Warning Means & How to Fix It

If you drive a Mercedes-Benz, you might have seen a message on your dashboard that says:

“Stop Vehicle – Leave Engine Running.”

This warning usually appears when there’s an issue with your vehicle’s electrical or charging system, especially the battery or alternator performance.

The “Stop Vehicle Leave Engine Running” message tells the driver that the battery charge level is too low, and the system is trying to recover power by keeping the engine running. In most cases, it’s an early warning of battery health problems or charging system inefficiency

 Diagnostic Details

When scanned using a diagnostic tool, the system showed the fault code:

B1F4500 - The Starter Battery Has Excessive Resistance..

At first, the battery voltage seemed fine when checked with a voltage meter — the readings were normal under all conditions (engine ON/OFF, accessories running, etc.).

However, when tested using a Launch battery tester, the results told a different story:

*Voltage: Normal

*Internal Resistance: Too High

*Result: Replace the Battery

Final Diagnosis & Solution

1-Fault code:

B1F450

2-Battery test result:

Replace Battery

Solution: Replace the vehicle’s main battery with an OEM-spec or high-quality equivalent battery that meets Mercedes-Benz standards. After replacement, clear the fault code and perform a battery registration or initialization procedure using a scanner.

🧰 Pro Tip from Workshop

Always test a Mercedes battery using a load or conductance tester, not just a simple voltmeter. Voltage alone cannot show the true health of a battery — internal resistance and cranking ability matter most.
